Both Viv and Carly find characters that seem harmless, but they just get that weird feeling around them for some reason. The bad guy(s) were obvious because it seemed like the author was afraid to put a mystery in place. Doors opened and lights went out! Viv and Carly smelled smoke, but nobody was around smoking! Ooooh, scary!! When the finale finally hit, it wasn't surprising or interesting. Something amazing could have happened with a story like this, but instead, it was as exciting as eating an unsalted cracker. Honestly, the entire plot of this story was just.boring. We didn't need to constantly learn everything in the same fashion over and over and over again! The chapter could start with her staring in shock at the old newspapers she had been going through while sitting by herself at a desk in the library. We could have learned this information with Viv and then, when the next chapter took place, we could be with Carly in the library after she discovered that piece of information. How thrilling! Ten pages later, we're with Carly and, hey, did you know there was a dead body found in a ditch in the 1980s?! This wasn't needed. Viv hears a story about a dead body found in a ditch. That same exact thing Viv just learned is then learned one chapter later in a similar fashion by Carly. Viv discovers something about the murderer in Fell, New York. Everything was repeated twice for no reason. Both women were quiet, nerdy, and didn't take crap despite how scared they were when faced with both the living and dead beings that visited the motel.Īn attachment to this complaint would be the way the story was told to us. If it wasn't for the extremely sexist and racist moments that took place during the 1980s portions of the story, it would feel like the same exact time with the same exact character throughout the entire novel. The chapters would switch between the two of them, but they were so similar, I had a hard time trying to remember whose timeline I was in. The only difference was Viv's story took place in 1982, while Carly's took place in 2017. The two lead characters, Viv and Carly, were literally the same exact person. I'm not one to stop reading novels, though, so I slogged my way through it.

This looked like such a promising story, but it fell flat before it hit the halfway point. I'm having a hard time finding good books in the thriller genre lately.
